انان که خاک را به نظر کیمیا کنند
ایا بود که گوشه چشمی به ما کنند
Those who turn lead into gold
Will they ever our sight behold?

دردم نهفته به ز طبیبان مدعی
باشد که از خزانه غیبش دوا کنند
I hide my ills from false physicians
May my cure come from the invisible fold.

چون حسن عاقبت نه به رندی و زاهدیست
ان به که کار خود به عنایت رها کنند
Salvation is not in piety,
The deed for its own sake should unfold.

می خور که صد گناه ز اغیار در حجاب
بهتر ز طاعتی که به روی و ریا کنند
Drinking the forbidden wine with sincerity
Surpass the moral rules we pretend to uphold.

حالی درون پرده بسی فتنه می رود
تا ان رمان که پرده بر افتد چه ها کنند
Behind the veil, many schemes remain,
After unveiling, how will they be sold?

معشوق چون نقاب ز رخ بر نمی کشد
هر کس حکایتی به تصور چرا کنند
When beloved reveals a glimpse
Many tales by many are told.

گر سنگ از این حدیث بنالد عجب مدار
صاحبدلان حکایت دل خوش ادا کنند
Heartwarming tales of lovers in this world
Warm even the hearts that may be ice cold.

پیراهنی که اید از او بوی یوسفم
ترسم برادران غیورش قبا کنند
The shirt that carried Joseph’s scent,
His brothers would gladly have sold.

بی معرفت مباش که در من یزید عشق
اهل نظر معامله به اشنا کنند
Be fair with my increasing love
Let not others mock me and scold.

بگذر به کوی میکده تا زمره حضور
اوقات خود ز بهر تو صرف دعا کنند
Come, show yourself in the tavern
To the servants whom your passage extolled.

پنهان ز حاسدان به خودم خوان که منعمان
خیر نهان برای رضای خدا کنند
Keep jealous eyes away, because the good
For God’s sake, choose the good and bold.

حافظ مدام وصل میسر نمی شود
شاهان کم التفات به حال گدا کنند
Hafiz, sustained union cannot be cajoled;
Kings in the marketplace rarely strolled.
